You’ve invested in awesome custom apparel for your business, event, or team. Now you want that vibrant screen print graphic to stay bright and crack-free for as long as possible. The good news is that with a few simple changes to your laundry routine, you can significantly extend the life of your custom shirts.
Here is your essential guide to washing, drying, and caring for screen-printed garments.
1. The Pre-Wash Prep: What to Do First
The way you prepare your shirt is the most important step in protecting the print.
- Turn it Inside Out (The Golden Rule): This is the single best thing you can do. Turning the shirt inside out protects the graphic from friction with the washing machine drum and other clothes. This friction is what causes prints to fade, peel, or crack prematurely.
- Wash with Similar Colors: Especially for the first few washes, avoid washing dark shirts with whites. Even though the print is cured, some dye might run from the fabric, and it’s best practice to keep colors separate.
- Zip it Up: Make sure all zippers, buttons, and snaps on other garments are fastened. These metal parts can rub against and damage the print on your shirt during the wash cycle.
2. The Wash Cycle: Keeping it Cool
Heat and agitation are the enemies of screen printing ink. Keep the water temperature and wash cycle gentle.
- Use Cold Water: Always use cold water to wash your custom shirts. Cold water helps prevent the ink from bleeding or cracking and reduces the amount the garment shrinks.
- Choose a Gentle Cycle: Use the “Delicate,” “Gentle,” or “Handwash” setting on your washing machine. This minimizes the speed and duration of the agitation, which protects the integrity of the print.
- Mind the Detergent: Use a mild laundry detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals, especially bleach and fabric softeners, as these can break down the plasticizer compounds in the screen printing ink over time.
3. The Drying Process: Patience is a Virtue
Tumble dryers use high heat and friction, both of which are harmful to screen prints.
- Air Dry Whenever Possible (Best Method): The absolute best way to dry your custom shirt is to hang it up or lay it flat to air dry. It takes a little longer, but it eliminates heat damage and prevents shrinkage, keeping your shirt looking new.
- Use Low Heat (If You Must Tumble Dry): If you need to use a dryer, keep the shirt inside out and use the lowest heat setting available (like “Tumble Dry Low” or “Air Fluff”). Pull the shirt out of the dryer as soon as the cycle is done, or even when it’s still slightly damp, and hang it up to finish drying.
4. Special Care: Ironing and Stain Removal
Sometimes, you need to spot-treat a stain or iron out a wrinkle. Do so carefully.
- Never Iron Directly on the Print: The direct heat from an iron can melt the ink and ruin the graphic. If you absolutely need to iron, turn the shirt inside out and use a low-heat setting.
- Remove Stains with Care: If you have a stain on or near the graphic, avoid rubbing too aggressively. Always test any stain remover on an inconspicuous area of the shirt (like the inside seam) before applying it to the print.
By following these simple steps—mostly centered on keeping the shirt inside out and staying away from high heat—you can enjoy your custom screen-printed t-shirts for many seasons to come!
